Solar Auxilia Legate Commander - WIP

Afternoon,

Here are a few shots of my WIP Legate Commander for my Solar Auxilia. He is around 90% complete. The majority of remaining work is just getting the black to be more subtle which will involve some washing and softer highlights with a very light grey for the top shade.

Thoughts?

Peace out,

Rob

  2. I am liking the paintjob. Not sure on the pose though.

    What are your basing plans?

    1. Just the same as all the other auxilia mate. Will have a post up showing some more base building en masse in preparations for the rest of my storm section arriving!

Yeah sadly its the only pose they do. Even more annoyingly, you can take the commander as a separate HQ in the rules but they only sell him with the command section for £65 you can't buy him on his own!

  3. Looks good buddy, any chance of a better pic of the sword? The first one doesn't do it any favours I think...

    1. Wasn't till you said it that I realised it looks like a balloon animal snake in the first one... Hopefully better looking in the updated post!

  5. That's looking fantastic! You may want to sharpen up the highlights on the robes; I usually end up wet-blending them.

    1. Haha wet blending is beyond me mate! Really struggle with and gave up long ago for my drybrush wash glaze combinations. This is why I was surprised you said you'd want me to paint anything for you, with your awesome skills :)

  6. If I could figure out how I do wet blending myself I would post a tutorial :o) I can remember when I started learning how to do it; it was tough. The main problem was the paint job getting too thick. I spent quite a while just assuming I was doing it wrong and would never "get it", until I combined it with some new paint thinning strategies.

Rob, you are developing a style that is unique to you (...and hard won, I wager). I see a diverse pallet, profound contrast (between painfully bright and stygian), admirable attention to detail and brush control. Most importantly, I see a careful regard for the sculpts and a commitment to bringing out the best in them, regardless of where that takes you (green horrors!). Of course I want you to paint something for me, I just haven't decided exactly *what* yet :o)
