Blog News/Admin - The Impact of Real Life

Afternoon all,

Today, as the title suggests, is one of the more dull posts I'll put up! The Blog has been doing very well the past few months with a solid 20-25k views a month and a good latent view count. By latent view count I mean how many views I get on days that I don't post.

The blog has really helped me cut the chaff from my none-work and social activities, discarding half-hearted forays into other hobbies, as I realise like many of us do that 40k or Fantasy or even now 30k is our first and one true love as a hobby.

I thought very much that I would be bored of blogging after a few months and/or be terrible at it in the sense that nobody much would like to read my crap or see my hobby. Thankfully that hasn't been the case (I think and hope!) and I've enjoying pushing the blog on and I will continue to keep pushing the blog on as far as an Amateur such as myself is able to do. As much as I would like to make the hobby a profession (so say we all) my skills sadly lie in other areas.

Which neatly segues us into the Impact of Real Life. As many of you will know I am a researcher at the university of Bristol in the UK and I have been studying for my PhD for some time and the time is rapidly approaching where I will have to actually start writing my The Damn Thesis of Doom.

Obviously this is going to be quite the endeavour and will take up a good chunk of my time, thus the rate at which I blog will go down. I average around 22 blog posts a month currently and I expect that to go down to around the 10-15 mark, as much as it might be good for productivity to drop lower, the blog is a keystone of my sanity so to hell with stopping!

I expect this'll bump my views down, but I haven't spent £30k plus of my own cash to let that worry me too much at this stage! Additionally a fair amount of the hobby work I will post is likely to be commissions that will help me live whilst writing my thesis as in addition to taking holiday to write I may well have to take some unpaid leave that Commissions can help pull the slack up on.

Anyway, that's an overly wordy update on my life an the blog as it goes!

Any suggestions for improvements to the blog are always well appreciated indeed. I would be very keen for someone to help with the design of the blog as I dislike the current 'myspace' feel of it aesthetic. Though that may be an inherent Blogger issue, I am a dummy in these situations so can't really say!

Oh and finally Greg, I have a tripod for my camera and I am buying a bigger light box with some varied back grounds... Always working on the photography I promise you :P

Peace out,

Rob

30k/40k YouTube Channels - Recommendations

Afternoon all,

Some time ago I wrote a post recommending several YouTube channels that I thought were great for watching Battle Reports primarily, but also gave some other good content in general. Today I thought I would re-visit this with some new additions!

The Old

Before I launch into some of the newer channels that I have been watching videos on I thought it worthwhile to mention the channels from the original post and update you on my opinions on them!

TTT has gone from strength to strength over the past year and a bit, Lawrence Baker the primary master mind behind TTT has, for myself, the most professionally made and high quality 40k channel out there. I really do rate his Battle Reports as second to none in terms of production quality, army variety, terrain etc etc. Not only this but he is very lucky to have a willing group of vagabond friends that join in with this menagerie of madness. I think it is very obvious in 30k/40k Battle Reports when friends are playing each other as the banter flows and that is very apparent in TTT.

Additionally Lawrence is a VERY tactically minded player. As a subscriber to his on demand channel (£3.99 a month and worth every penny), there are some tactica videos on there that have really changed how I build my armies and I'm not even a competitive player! Following his logic can help you make a competitive army and be a competitive player but they also just help you make an army that doesn't fall apart immediately. And you know what? That makes your games more FUN too.

I have been trying to get across to play Lawrence or any member of the TTT team for some time but alas life keeps getting in the way!

Winters has a much more narrative approach to wargaming, and having played him twice now I can't emphasise enough how much effort he puts in to make his battle reports, not just a randomly set up series of dice rolls, but an actual story that helps engross you in the 30k/40k universe.

This is incredibly apparent in his narrative dialogue that he presents as he also explains the points of interest in the battle, but what you don't get to see as the viewer is the time and effort Winters' puts in to setting the table up to create an atmospheric battle ground for a story to take place upon. Additionally the fluff doesn't end when the camera turns off, he is a true and proper fluff junkie who you could sit down with a beer or 12 and just talk about the grim dark till the grim dark actually comes!

I have loved both of my games with Winters' and he has been incredibly gracious and helpful to myself and I look forward to playing him again very much,

The Geeks, much like TTT, have exploded over the past year! The content they have been producing has diversified into a lot of 30k battle reports and they have also had a series of collaborative efforts with Winters Seo as well.

The comments above about banter and being able to tell when its proper mates playing each other applies massively to the Geeks. Cheeky digs at each others armies often give me a chuckle and you know that it is all in jest and they are just engrossing themselves in the universe whilst not taking themselves too seriously.

With their out reach into 30k, the battle reports have really broadened out to include many different armies and I am a big fan of the variety of games they play as well as where they play them, with Warhammer World close by they often make use of of the fantastic scenic tables there to have some truly dramatic games.

These are another group of lads I would dearly love to play against!

The New

This pair of North Eastern jokers are another good example of playing to the spirit of the game with good friends. They build in nice levels of narrative and often make reference to the oddities of playing model soldiers that we all know and love. My favourite being "Dare I say anything but a 1..." before that inevitable 1 is rolled!

These chaps also often play with armies and lists that are lesser seen on the internet and are very much not optimised to smash face, giving the content of the channel a very different and interesting diversity less seen else where.

This channel is still pretty young, but I am always pleased to see a new upload from them and would heartily recommend you go and check them out :)

Much like Winters Seo, the Legion focus on a very heavily narrative wargaming style of battle reports. More than anything else I love the level of effort they put into making battle reports inter-connected with several large and small narrative style campaigns on the channel, where the preceding battle has an actual impact on the design of the next game. This makes watching 3-5 videos in a row very easy as you follow an over arching story on a single planet or battle zone.

In terms of the style of armies on the channel there is a nice mix of the more popular formation based armies such as their Tau and Raven Guard lists, but they also have a beautiful Tyrannid army that makes use of many of the lesser utilised creatures that the Hive Mind has to offer.

My final point is that they also have a good amount of 30k games and that all of their armies, both personal and commissioned are stunning and that makes the reports all the more engrossing as you watch them.

Another very young channel and definitely the most unpolished in terms of production on here. But I absolutely lovely the relaxed nature of the videos and the narrative of the game as they go along, with each terrible roll met with groans behind the camera and each 6 cheered onwards.

I am enjoying everything this young channel is putting out and I am really looking forward to seeing what they produce as they go onward. I definitely think they are worth your time and I also think that the more support and subscriptions they get the better their channel will be!

So why not give them a visit and watch some of their great videos :)

That's all from me today, more hobby stuff coming up soon!

Peace out,

Rob

Deathwing Commission WIP

Hi Gang,

I've been working on some commission work today with some Deathwing Terminators. As with all of my work, you don't really get clean lines but more akin to something that has had the shit beaten out of it... These are a 95% WIP with the final cleaning and pointing to do before finishing the bases as well.

Expect about 20-25 more of the guys along with a couple of land raiders and dreadnoughts. I also have some Ravenwing in the bag to go with them. Honestly I hated painting these because of the light colour of the armour! But I'm happy with how they've come out and as long as the client is happy then I'm happy!

Peace out,

Rob

The Loyal III of Istvaan - The Emperor's Children

Howdy all,

By now I imagine that it comes as no surprise that my 'secret' project has been some Emperor's Children, made primarily from Anvil Industry parts. This is a very small army that has not been designed to be competitive in any way, but rather to reflect the fluff of the loyalist Emperor's Children that survived the initial virus bombing and firestorm unleashed by the traitor legions on Istvaan III.

This means I haven't put any vehicles in the list, barring 3 jetbikes that haven't really seen any work thus far. So its very much a foot slogging element. Given the Tactical prowess that Saul Tarvitz shows in the books (or audobooks in my case), I have decided to use the Maru Skara rite of war. This allows 1-3 Elite/Fast choices to outflank and arrive on any pre-selected turn after the first.

This army is still very much a work in progress with all the shield arms still to do as well as back packs and jump packs for the assault squad and breacher squad. I've tried to use cloaks and helmet plums to distinguish between squads, sergeants and the elite Palantine blades.

In a fit of productivity this weekend I have completed the 20 infantry for the breachers and assault marines as well as the four remaining Palantine blades. I still have my Saul Tarvitz conversion, an Apothecary, a Legion Champion, a Vigilator and 3 x jetbikes to get going on but I hope you enjoy these half way pictures!

Answers on a post card!

Peace out,

Rob

200,000 views and 2500 Comments!

Hi Gang!

A completely self congratulatory post today! But over the last 24 hours I have hit two milestones that seem worthy of a little celebration!! I have another one coming up soon that will involve a giveaway so keep your eyes peeled!

So 200,000 views! Blimey! That seems pretty insane to me, and I'm approaching 3,000,000 views on my google+ profile which blows my tiny little mind! More than views though to have so many comments on my blog, both constructive for me and also showing that other people have found my ramblings helpful is actually very humbling.

I can not thank all my readers both regular and infrequent enough for all the help and kindness as well as sarcastic humour ;)

It feel unbelievably awesome to have carved out my own little niche in this hobby that people seem to continue to enjoy visiting :) I have many plans for the future with more review content, plenty of models including a good batch of alternative GW models as well as more and more new armies cropping up!

So hopefully you're looking forward to seeing what is in store as much as I'm looking forward to building and writing it! I've had a fair rough time of late with a large degree of mental health problems, but the blog and hobby have always been a great refuge and inspiration for me, so thank you, thank you again, and thank you a thousand times more.

As I said, keep your eyes peeled for the next milestone I will pass soon where I will have some goodies up for grabs!

Peace out,

Rob

Solar Auxilia Overview - A Video Review!

Hi gang,

With my recent trip to play Winters Seo I chatted to him for some advice about things I've been wanting to do for the blog for sometime. Winters being an old hand at the whole internet fame kerfuffle gave me a lot of advice and he very kindly offered to host a few of my videos on his most excellent channel!

So I recently recorded a video giving a brief over view of the Solar Auxilia as presented in the big red book. A few too many swear words, poor video editing and two mistakes but I think its a pretty good job overall!

Please bear in mind there seems to be a problem with audio for some people on phones and tablets! But it works fine on any PC it seems.

Enjoy and please go and visit and subscribe to Winters Seo's brilliant channel. It has brilliant narrative battle reports as well as painting guides and reviews :)

Peace out,

Rob

Emperor's Children Palantine Blade Prefector - 3rd Party Parts

Hey all,

Today I finished the first of my 3rd party built Emperor's Children. This has been delayed a little as Laser Cut Candies was improving their cutting machinery and work space, but all for good quality and safety so not a problem waiting for them. But I realised I had one shield for the III legion and so finished off the Prefector for the Blades Squad.

Much like Rylanor was, these guys are supposed to be very beaten up, having withstood the assault of the traitor ground forces on Istavann III for close to a month now after the virus bombings.

I'm still undecided on the finishing touch for the blade and whether to have the left pauldron in white like the right one. But other than that I'm pretty happy with how it looks! Thoughts welcome.

Peace out,

Rob
