30k Alpha Legion - 5 More Painted and basing decisions...

Happy weekend to you,

So I have really been pushing myself to get all of my Alpha Legion Infantry painted up quickly so I can at least field the force partly painted and then this should allow me to take some time over the vehicles whilst doing infantry from other projects (legion of the damned) on the side in between drying phases which with washes in particular always take ages on vehicles.

Today I've got another 5 done to show you. This leaves just 3 more regular infantry to do and then I can start on painting Autilon Skorr who is my HQ for the force at 1850 or lower points levels.  After that I can paint Armillus Dynat who will be HQ in points levels above that. I'm really looking forward to Alpharius being sculpted by FW but I'm not holding my breath!

Pictures!

These are my final infantry to paint:

And these are 5 models left after them!

So you guys were pretty unanimous on suggesting a red planet base for these guys and that's what I have decided to go with! Though I am obviously going to add extra tidbits to the bases, the ones below are the bases I've decided to go with. They are pretty cheap with all the bases I need plus many spares costing me around the £30 mark so pretty pleased! I'll be ordering these in the coming weeks so hoping to get them started mid July or so.

I've also decided to invest in alternative flying stems as the GW ones give me no confidence with the heavier resin flyer, especially the Fire Raptors. So these should do the trick nicely as well.

Hopefully that has whetted your appetite on these guys for now and more should be incoming next week! If I can get all the infantry painted by July that will make me a happy man and mean I've painted the 22 infantry in about 21 days so just over 1 a day! As always I am sure I would have made a better job if painstakingly painted them like other people do, but I am always in a rush to play with new toys!!!

Peace out,

Rob

  1. I love those bases Rob. My mate Ben got them for his Skitarii, and painted them Red Planet BASE! Bases4war are one of the cheapest around, they don't have the largest range but what they do have are extremely good quality and designs and do come in pretty much all the sizes. My order took a week or so for delivery but Ben's was a bit quicker, I can only assume mine were being made to complete the order whereas Ben's was all in stock. Look forward to seeing them on the Marines.

    1. Cheers Dave, I think it was you who told me about them at Double Trouble, I can't quite remember though... Glad to know they are the good stuff though ;)

  2. Awesome! Really digging how the army is coming together, the red bases are really going to make the AL scheme pop. Good stuff, man!

    1. Thanks Man! Probably gonna go for a slightly darker red and blood on the bases with some razor wire as well

  3. Isn't Alpharius already released? I'm pretty sure I have an unpainted one laying on my desk atm ^^

  4. The OSL you use is well done and on the combi-plasma it's particularly nice. I wonder if FW really have made Alpharius but they're hiding him somewhere on the site.

    1. Or they tried to put him up on the site, but he's biding his time and even they can't find him right now ;)

    2. Thanks D :) after your two comments I may have tried a few Alpha Legion terms in the FW search box just in case he turned up...

  5. Looking nice, dude! The Red Planet basing will definitely look great with them.

Man, that Heavy Bolter dude is a sweet Model. It's too bad they're pretty consistently garbage, Rules-wise.

I got a second-hand Fire Raptor a while ago that has one of those flight stand adapters, and I'd kind of been wondering where they come from.

    1. Thanks boss :)

They are pretty good with a suspensor web on veterans as you can give them sniper for 3 full range shots wounding monsters on a 4+ and rending on a 6.

Ah does it do a better job do you think? I've always thought they looked like a good idea but have never seen them used.

    2. Cool. Those sorts of upgrade would definitely make Heavy Bolters much more useful in 40K. They need something to help them out.

I don't really know. I got it third-hand actually, and the original owner did an absolutely horrible job of putting it together, then didn't store it carefully after that. The adapter was one of many parts that broke off. I'm planning on doing a bit of a series about rescuing it when I get around to doing the work. I did know about the condition when I got it, but it was super cheap, so I figured it was worth it as a project.
