Scyllax ahoy! Domitars and Magos Dominus Based

Hey web-mateys,

I recently purchased some Scyllax from a trading group on facebook for a very decent price, however they appear to have been posted by someone who has no idea about packaging miniatures and a lot of the very delicate arms have snapped off. Much anger and blue air occurred... However they should fix up nicely, plus I have to remove them from their bases anyway so I can make them match the rest. Here's some pictures as I got them:

In better news however I had a really fun evening putting the Domitar and Magos Dominus bases together, really enjoyed making a squished PDF trooper! I painted him a dull blue to try and get that across compared to more standard IG colours. Very pleased overall, even had a go at making intestines! These guys are all complete now :)

I want to take the Scyllax to Double Trouble run my Alex at From the Fang so they will be top priority this weekend to get them undercoated and the seraphim sepia layers down at least. Whilst I'm on that I will also do the Vorax as it saves time doing all the yellow at once. Once they are complete I will build my Homonculex conversion from my spare Domitar and also get on with that I think. The only Mechanicum unit I have any plans to do in the near future is my Imperial Knight and that will be a slow burn project, though I have lots of grand (and therefore unachievable) ideas for it!

After that... Alpha Legion...

Peace out,

Rob

Horus Heresy Review: Caleb Decima

Hi there, come here often?

Taking a break from the more heretical sides of the Mechanicum, today I will elucidate the rules of Caleb Decima. Shot down in a furious fireball to the surface of Isstvan III, Caleb Decima survived and fought back, some might say he even flourished. The Traitor Mechanicum rightly feared his power of mind and body.

Caleb Decima is a member of the Ordo Reductor and destruction lies in his wake.

Unit Stats

Decima doesn't have the most impressive stats to be honest, but his rules and other upgrades do make him a good choice in the end. His base stats are as below:

WS  BS  S  T  W  I  A  LD  Sv
  3      4    5  5   3   4  2   10    3+

So decent strength and toughness, though his toughness does include his machinator array in the profile so it actually sits at 4 but as the machinator array is none optional its basically 5. The 3+ save will hurt but he does have a few boons up his sleeve to help negate that a little. 3 wounds puts him in the mid tier HQ choice at this point.

Overall - Not a bad statline but nor exceptional in any way. For 175 points you might be expecting more...

Special Rules

Like many of the mechanicum characters, Decima comes choc full of special rules. Below are the generic rules you can find in the 40k rulebook.

Stubborn
Battlesmith
Independent Character
Precision Shot

A good list to be sure. With Stubborn and LD10 you aren't going to be failing often at all and battlesmith plus the machinator array means you will repair on a 3+. Precision shot helps with the Melta gun that is built into his machinator array as well for sniping any power fist sergeants you meet.

As well as these rules he has several unique rules that are pretty damn awesome.

Bodyguard - Decima can be accompanied by a unit of Tech priest Auxilia (with the Reductor arcana a mandatory selection) or a unit of Scyllax Guardians. Neither of these will take up a slot in the force org table and count as the same HQ unit.

Master of Destruction - All of Caleb Decima's attacks (doesn't specify close combat or shooting so BOTH) have the Sunder special rule for extra iron breaking goodness. Additionally any roll made my himself on the damage table is modified by +1 which IS cumulative with AP bonuses and for open topped. So with a melta gun you can blow an open topped vehicle on a 3! The best part of this though is that he can confer this rule on ANY heavy or ordnance weapon on a friendly vehicle or unit within 6". This includes a transport he is embarked upon.

So you can grant sunder and +1 to damage rolls to the ordnance 4 gun of a Krios Venator if it is within 6". Very tasty.

Walker in Ruin - A really nice an flavoured rule to represent the warfare fought on Isstvan III. He and any unit he joins are immune to pinning and ignore any penalties from terrain if it is rubble, ruins, trenchworks and minefields. Situational but tasty if you are on that sort of board.

Warlord Trait - Battlefield Analysis - Allows you to nominate a piece of terrain and lower its cover save by -1 which along with other cover save reducing shenanigans in the Mechanicum will serve you very well. Cover is always important so this is always good.

Curse of the Omnissiah - This rule will cause cries of foul play and terror in the depths of the enemy armoured line... This is Caleb Decima's final gambit that puts himself at risk as much as anyone else... He can elect to forgo all his shooting attacks and instead unleash a storm of electromagnetic death on the enemy with the following profile:

Curse of the Omnissiah: 18" S3, AP3, Heavy 2D6, One Use, HAYWIRE

Thats right ladies and gents, you can DESTROY pretty much anything below titans in one volley with this beast if the stars align. You will on average pump out 7 shots and hit with 4-5 of them. This also benefits from his Master of Destruction rule so if you roll a pen you can explode! Obviously you could put a snake eyes down and then miss with both, but this is an excellent f**k you in the bag.

Equipment

OK so Decima has pretty standard equipment that I will just rattle through here. You've got a bolt pistol and power axe that are both master crafted which is fine, you also get a 5++ from a refractor field which is pretty meh, and finally he has melta bombs and who doesn't love those.

Nothing to write home about, but he does have a couple of upgrades up his sleeve that can help. Firstly he can take a cyber familiar for 15 points that pushes that invuln save up to a 4++, I would heartily recommend you do this if you are taking him as your main HQ in lower (<2000 points) games. Secondly he can take Servo Automata to accompany him, but there are better things for him to be accompanying so these can bugger off for the cost of 12 points each.

Thirdly and finally he has the upgrade Decima Invictus. This upgrade represents the battle hardened and bitter Decima following Isstvan III, his body and mind warped in a maelstrom of war and hatred. This upgrade is three times the cost of the cyber familiar and taken together Caleb Decima will cost you a hefty 235 points. BUT this does grant you the Relentless special rule and the Eternal Warrior special rule. He now also counts as an Archmagos and he must be your warlord

Oh he can also take a Macroarid Explorator as a dedicated transport!

Utilisation

Caleb Decima is a truly solid HQ choice that can be taken for either an Ordo Reductor or a Taghmata Omnissiah force, not a Legio Cybernetica Cohort. He brings a lot of buffs to the force which gel incredibly well with the Ordo Reductor specific detachment. I don't really see why you would take him without taking an Ordo Reductor detachment as the buffs stack very nicely.

Without his Decima Invictus upgrade I would only ever take him in small scale games or as a support HQ in a big points game. If you want him to stand as your main HQ then take the Invictus upgrade as not only does this make him more survivable but it also guarantees that he can fire his curse of the omnissiah on the move as IT IS a heavy weapon and he does not have relentless as standard. Plus if he can grant master of destruction to any of the large ordnance tank weapons the Reductors can bring then your opponent will have a very bad day.

I don't look at Caleb Decima and go wow, BUT I think if you play your army with him in mind and design it the same way then he is an excellent HQ that doesn't have a win button unless you have a good tactical mind to go with him. He definitely need a bodyguard and I would be tempted with some Myrmidons of either variety in a vehicle, nice saves and toughness with multiple wounds and a hell of a punch.

Peace out,

Rob

Sci-Fi Short Story - Not 40k

Afternoon all,

In a little break from 40k I thought I would share a sci-fi short story I entered into a competition some time ago, I didn't win but received commendation. Hope you enjoy!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The dull dust stirred underfoot as I dragged my failing limb through the streets. The dark amber glow through the heavy clouds glinted off the stones’ spires. The intense heat had blasted their surfaces to glass and the soft light made them look wreathed in flame once more; the shifting clouds overhead were reflected as strange leaping shadows of fire across their faces. A haunted scream of the ancient dead.

As I passed between the narrow berths of these colossi the dim whirr and click of my failing leg peddled a melancholy tune. I hummed along, as I had grown used to its dying sing-song and sorely wanted to commit its rhythm to memory. I imagined I could fondly recall its service once it was necessarily cast aside through the hum hum humming I practised.

Sitting myself down upon the wayside (for to still call it a roadside would be supremely generous) I removed my trusted fork and flicked open the chrome-etched fascia of my calf. The three little prongs were apparently ideal for eating cake, though they served exceptionally well as a key to my inner workings. I continued to happily hum along as I cleaned the grit and ash from the mechanisms in an effort to slow the decay. Briefly, as always, I wondered what percentage of this nuisance dirt used to be people. My humming stopped upon that sad thought and I stared deeply into the tiny little maze of rotary metal that kept me limping on.

Tears did not form, as they never could. I had of course seen the videos in my youth of tear-stained cheeks soaked in forlorn love, pain or anger. They had fascinated me then, as they still did now, but I no longer had anyone to share that fascination with. There had been others, but they had chosen to forget and to sleep the long sleep. Those custodians had felt no desire to remain manifest in the world of grey and shadowed flames and so had put themselves deep into the ground free from the clogging dirt and erosion of time.

Raising myself from the wayside, the whine from my intricate innards brought a facsimile of a grimace to my face. Spare cogitators had been far easier to obtain in the early days. Not all custodians had survived and as much as the act of cannibalism felt inherently anathema, that grim task was faced with a resigned air of necessity spurred by my faith in the creators’ design for new life. High on the hill beyond the limits of the spires I had buried those dismantled wretches, each marked with the multi-coloured orb of the creators, a symbol of all we strove to return to the world.

As I reached my journey’s end my ocular motors slowly focused on the shelter that was my home with a mixture of pride and sadness. The semi-cylindrical poly-tunnel had taken months to construct. My arms had not originally been envisaged to bend rods of metal and it had proved challenging to provide a consistent curvature; though this difficulty had paled in comparison to removing the rods themselves from the rigid glassified rockrete in the first instance.

Plastex sheets formed a fine dome over the wrought framework, intensifying the light that entered through the dying sky to illuminate the cathedral of my world. The door to the tunnel with its glittering multi-coloured glass window always felt out of place on the front facing end, and in hindsight the columns that flanked it may have been a bit much, but then I was always prone to the ostentatious. But I could not resist laying such grandiose designs at the door to the new world from which the sweet breath of life would exit and cool this burnt land.

Continuing my lurch through the door, the fruits of my labour greeted me and pride at my persistence rose in a strange binary flutter. The sickly green and yellow leaves didn't dishearten me in the slightest. I was the life bringer to these ash wastes, rekindling the cycle of carbon and oxygen that had once dominated this world. One day greater life would return, though I would not be there to greet it.

Bitterness rose in my chest then, a hardened anger at those ageless, lifeless hulks in their living tombs beneath the ground. The custodians had been the last great gift to the planet and yet they had refused their calling, and had adopted the selfish, self-destructive cycle of the past. Immersed in selfish, destructive apathy they had been content to let the world die and do nought but hope for a miracle.
I was the miracle. I was the cure. I was God to a godless world and yet they, not I, would reap the fruits of my Eden when it finally arose. When all my cogs had long since ceased to turn and even my micro-fusion reactor had failed they would rise and they would not remember me! I had done my duty and brought this world back from the brink.

Sitting down on my polished chromium sleep-well, I sighed a sigh that moved not at all my empty chest and traced the etched words across its front, each precise line returning calm to me as I intoned the letters of my name out loud:

C-H-R-O-M-E-B-O-T-1-5-7-4

With a last look at my green and yellow Adam and Eve creations I lay myself down and ran my sleep cycle simulator, my optics slowly fading as the binary codes lull me into hibernation and I repeat the creators mantra over and over. Don’t be evil. Don’t be evil. Don’t be evil...

Legion of the Damned - Lost Souls of Fire and Death

Welcome to the aid unexpected,

So as I mentioned recently I managed to pick up some built Legion of the Damned second hand at a local hobby store (it will be the death of my bank balance) by trading in my magic the gathering cards. I've had a little play with them, though I need to fix one of the bases to match the rest. Pain!

Here's some pictures!

I'm looking forward to painting the flame effect and trying more standard blending compared to drybrush blending. I think I've gotten very good at drybrush blending with my mechanicum and by constant addition of OSL to everything I paint... But I am not at all confident with wet blending or even soft layering to be honest, but with such a small number of models I shouldn't get too much burn out by pushing myself with them.

That's all for today, expect some review posts this week and some more snaps of my mechanicum. If my LED lights arrive I'll also be cracking on with army pictures too.

Peace out,

Rob

Mechanicum Madness - Magos and Domitars Complete

Hi gang,

Today has been pleasantly productive in the last few hours. I was up at 5am and then at work till 10am but getting home at 10.30 I started to paint a Magos that had previously only be washed with sepia, and 3 hours later he is done! In the drying times for the Magos I also finished off the Domitars that I showed you yesterday, they just needed blood effect cabling and blue glow effect adding to their graviton hammers. Super pleased with how they have turned out and the Magos isn't too bad considering he was rescued from a box I had forgotten about and kitbashed with a 3rd edition incubus weapon...

Anyway pictures and feel free to give thoughts :)

The Magos will just be my cheap backfield magos to extend cortex controller range and repair my Krios Tanks with his battlesmith rule.

Coming up for the Mechanicum I have a unit of Scyllax that I got from heresy trading on facebook which was a nice bargain. I also have the converted Vorax and I have a third Domitar to convert into the Homonculex that follows Anacharis Scoria. And finally I have the Imperial Knight I purchased the other day.

Expect the first 3 to arrive pretty soon and the Knight to take a lot lot longer! I have really enjoyed painting this army and I only ordered the first batch from eBay on the 18th of January! It seems a life time ago, but progress has been pretty quick which is very pleasant.

Krios Venators - 90% Completed

How do all,

So I've been busying myself with getting more of my mechanicum painted recently, I'm still really enjoying painting these guys. Despite the same painting scheme the models are so varied that its a fresh challenge for each one that keeps me interested, which is in stark contrast to the dirge that the Death Company became towards the end.

So here are some pictures of my nearly finished Venators. The drivers are still on their sprues as the cockpit is accessible even when built so it won't be a hassle to put them in later. There are also a few shots of all the components before assembly. The kit is lovely but if you put it together completely before painting you would really struggle to reach a lot of pieces so I thoroughly recommend that you paint everything separately then assemble.

Here are also a few pics of my Domitars. Also mostly done but the bases need a lot of work on these guys.

Finally, does anyone know a good place to find high quality pictures of battle field background for 30/40k? I need to print one out as a background image for my army pictures that I am going to be taking. I want to make them a bit more cinematic and I've seen these kind of pictures used as back drops for battle reports on youtube, but I'm not sure where I would find more 30/40k specific ones that don't have miniatures in already.

Any pointers would be brilliant :)

Peace out,

Rob
