Double Trouble - Tournament Review

Hey all,

So yesterday I attended Double Trouble with a friend of mine Dan. The tournament was run by the one and only Alex of From the Fang fame. It was different than a normal doubles tournament as you were paired up with 3 new people for every game with one of them making your partner.

I'm afraid due to the lighting at the venue as well as my general tiredness I took few pictures! BUT I played two of my games with Luke Fogg of Darksun fame and Dave Weston of 40k Addict infamy! So I shall be poaching pictures and videos from them as soon as they make them available to my grubby hands...

In terms of results it was by far my best showing at a tournament, I think mostly due to the resilience of my Mechanicum and some very favourable pairings as well as card draws. There was two main prizes for the games which were bloodiest general and most tactical general. The bloodiest was basd on how many points of the enemy you destroyed and tactical was based on overall VPs from scoring objectives.

As it happens I drew for first place with 50 VPs!! But I lost out the overall win as the chap I tied with (Matthew Grimes) had more destroyed points of the enemy overall. But I'll take a second any day!! In addition to this Alex has a great hobby set up where you can enter best converted, best special character, best monstrous creature/vehicle and best army. I entered best vehicle with my Krios and took home the win!!

I had a really smashing time with the way Alex organises and prioritises aspects of his events really making it a good experience.

On a down note, I and several others, felt like Alex had been given a very raw deal by the venue as they prioritised terrain and tables and service to a privateer press event up stairs, so we were stuck in the dark dungeon. A really shoddy way to treat such a nice guy who has brought so many events to the venue. BUT it didn't really alter my overall enjoyment and Alex has said he may switch venue to the Outpost for his next event so all is well.

Hopefully I'll have some pictures for you as soon as others get them up :P and also hopefully some alpha legion! Though my airbrush for layering washes very quickly has bust so going will be slow!

Peace out,

Rob

    1. Thanks dude! Matt Greenwood said that the rules pack will be out in the next few weeks and that tickets will be on sale via The Outpost, Alex will also have it on his blog, sounds fun!

  2. Great to get a game with you this time and I have no shame getting hammered by such a great looking (and well played) Mechanicum army! :)

    1. Absolutely fella! Fire escape blues was one of my favourite memories from blog wars X so it was good to see a familiar face :)

Though I think 4 x S9 AP2 shots to kill your ethereal was bit over kill. I'd like to face your storm surge some time if you make it to brizzle!

    2. I'm going to try, but the train tickets look to be about £120 and I haven't even looked at accommodation yet. I would drive down, but it is a long drive and I think the drive back up would be too dangerous with almost no sleep.

    3. I could see if anyone close by has a sofa or spare room you could use!

  5. Thanks for the kind words. I promise I'll get around to posting the results from the event soon. Ended up staying up until 2.30 am after the event playing Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes with friends. As you can imagine I'm pretty knackered so I'll post tomorrow.

@Nick Matt is busy with work at the moment but will finalise all the details for Fluffageddon soon. I'll let people know about DT2 as soon as I confirm venue etc.

    2. It was a great tournament with your usual sarcastic pizzaz Alex :P I hope you don't think anyone was disappointed with the tournament as the actual playing ad socialising side of stuff was great as usual, mostly just angry on your behalf!

  7. I had a really great time Rob, I'm going to really struggle with battle reports because it felt like such a whirlwind and really it was about the people, the games seem much less relevant compared to hanging out with you and the 'famous' Luke Fogg [who I was against in the last game], Alex and who I was partnered with. Not to mention seeing familiar faces like Ian, the German posse and my own Battle Brother Dan, who went on to win the award for killing more than anyone else.

I absolutely loved the event, despite the problems with the venue and food. The sad thing is because of the cock up this may be the last of Alex's events at the NWGC, which is such a shame as it potentially could get better and better. Thanks again for a great game.

    2. I'm really torn on the venue. It's a great location for people and they let me run the events how I want to with minimal cost per person. I'm not a huge fan of their Events Manager though having dealt with him at other venues. I'd also want to order my own lunch!

The place really does look infinitely better than before so it seems a bit like cutting my nose off to spite my face. The Outpost in Sheffield is an option when they get the venue sorted but I'm not sure they'd let me run it how I want to and things like the raffle might suffer. I'll be discussing it on the blog of course so any feedback is greatly appreciated.

    3. Thanks Dave, I'm gonna put them together for a bat rep on that game this weekend :)

It was a real joy to actually have a game with you, though it did degenerate into larping about (see what I did there...)!

I really enjoyed the chance to meet 3 people per game, it makes a nice change from 5 people over a two day tournament, I felt like the laughs flowed very easily indeed!

    4. It's always a good tournament when I get people coming over to the table to see why I am shouting (in joy and anger in equal measure at Double Trouble!).

  8. Well done on the win and that is a real shame for Alex. People enjoyed his event in spite of the hurdles thrown at him.
