So Today I thought I'd give you a few shots of my Cerastus Castigator. Its an amazing model and was a tonne of fun to put together. However, its difficult to really emphasise enough how much my painting has improved from basically pretty damn poor to whatever stage its at now. I wish I had waited some time to paint this guys as I don't think he looks all that good. Certainly not good enough for me to take him to an event.
Unfortunately he has snow effect all over so I need to have a good hard think about the best way ti improve his current condition. Any suggestions would be really appreciated as this is a bit beyond my skill at the moment I feel.
Peace out,
Rob
If you're intent on repainting it then I'd suggest Fairy Power Spray is your best option in stripping it down and should remove the snow in the process. bathing it in other products, like Dettol, would be much harder and require mmore product. Fairy on the other hand can be sprayed all over and left to do it's magic then rinsed off under the tap. It's what I would do in your position.
ReplyDeleteIt's a pretty nuclear option though so you better eb prepared for some messy results and potentiallly a few applications to strip away all the remnants of your early attempt. Good luck with it and courage throughout should you go ahead.
I think I might end up getting a couple of options and trying them out and if they don't work on just a small section I might just have to write it off. Which is a shame as I just probably won't play with or display all that often. Thanks for the advice though!
DeleteThat's actually not too bad, but you're right, it's definitely not up to the level you're at now. I've never had to strip a resin model, so no suggestions here, but best of luck!
ReplyDeleteYeah it wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't such an awesome and expensive kit!
DeleteIf you want to use fairy power spray to strip it, be careful as it can soften the resin and make it quite malleable.
ReplyDeleteYou could just embrace the model for what it is, a progression in your painting journey, or just go back and add highlights, tidy areas up, rebase ect. I think a strip down might be way too much work and prob put you off painting it up again
Unfortunately I'm beginning to think this might be the case, but it wounds me so :P
DeleteFairy Power Spray has changed formula recently so doesn't work as well. Biostrip and most other strippers will soften resin. Might be better to overpaint it. Try a dark colour as you should get good coverage without too much thickness of paint. Weathering like rust and typhus corrosion will work with thickly painted models. Maybe you could give it a good scrub with soapy water forst as this often removes snow effect.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think if I have a go it will be a good scrub with a nylon brush I have first and see what I can dislodge before going in for the kill.
DeleteI know it is an expensive model but I would probably chalk this one up to experience. Not because it looks bad, just because the snow makes a simple touch up a lot more difficult. I use Simple Green for stripping and it is quite efficient, though I haven't tried it with resin. Do you have access to Simple Green? You would have to buy a lot of it but considering the cost of the model it may be worth it.
ReplyDeleteNo simple green here in the UK but dettol is a comparative product and works a treat (make sure you get the brown stuff). Not sure how it works on resin though
DeleteAh thats interesting, I'd tried dettol before and got extremely mediocre results compared to Wilkinson's acetone free nail varnish remover, but I didn't use the brown stuff.
DeleteAs I've said above, maybe this is too big a task. Regardless I wouldn't be starting on it particularly soon but it might just gather some dust now. Boooo
